Finasteride

About Finasteride

Finasteride is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), such as frequent and difficult urination. Besides this, it is also used to treat male pattern hair loss.

Finasteride contains Finasteride, which works by blocking the action of male hormones that cause prostate enlargement and hair loss. Thereby, it helps treat BPH and male pattern hair loss.

In some cases, Finasteride may cause low sexual desire, impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, or trouble having an orgasm. Most of these side effects of Finasteride may not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.

Do not take Finasteride if you are allergic to any of its components. Finasteride is not intended for use in women and children. Keep the doctor informed about your health condition and medications to rule out any side effects/interactions.

Finasteride, commonly known as the brand name Propecia, is a medication primarily used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and other forms of hair loss. This article delves into the available research, diagnosis, and treatment options, as well as potential side effects and their implications for individual patients.

Overview of Finasteride: Mechanism of Action

Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, it effectively inhibits the growth of hair follicles, which leads to hair regrowth and a thicker and longer-lasting hairline. This dual action allows for a more consistent and healthy hair growth.

How Finasteride Works: Mechanism of Action in Hair Loss

Finasteride, a type of medication primarily used to treat male pattern hair loss, works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. DHT is responsible for miniaturizing hair follicles and shrinking the hair shaft. By reducing DHT levels, Finasteride can halt hair loss and promote regrowth in individuals who have experienced hair loss in the past.

    Uses of Finasteride

Finasteride is primarily prescribed to treat male pattern hair loss. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, it can halt hair loss and promote regrowth in individuals who have experienced hair loss in the past.

For individuals who have not experienced hair loss in the past, Finasteride may be an option for those who are looking to improve their hair. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using this medication.

    Who Can Use Finasteride?

Patients who are experiencing hair loss or have not experienced hair loss in the past should discuss with their healthcare provider. It is crucial to consider the potential risks and benefits of Finasteride before deciding on its use. Patients who are on finasteride therapy or those who are taking other medications may be more susceptible to adverse effects.

The UK patent forPropecia, a hair loss treatment for men, expired on the 11th Oct 2014. A few days later ‘generic Propecia’ or more accurately ‘generic finasteride’ became available from UK pharmacies. A generic medicine is a medicine which is the same as a branded original, but is prescribed and supplied by its medical name, rather than its brand name.

Propecia is a brand name. The active ingredient of Propecia tablets isfinasteride 1mg. Propecia tablets and finasteride 1mg tablets are medically the same.

Dr Fox supplies both from the drug companyMerck(MSD), which held the original patent, and lower cost, which other drug companies have made available since Merck’s UK patent expired.

    Why patent expiry matters

When a medicine comes off patent price can fall dramatically. Men, who previously paid very high prices for Propecia, may be able to buy medically identical finasteride 1mg at lower prices.

When a medicine is under patent it can only be sold legally by the patent holder. This means the patent holder, which is normally the drug company which paid to develop the medicine in the first place, is free to market the medicine without competition from other pharmaceutical companies. The result is usually very high prices. When a patent expires other drug companies usually start to produce the same medicine, known as a generic copy, and start to compete on price. As a result the cost to patients tends to fall.

How low will the price of Propecia / finasteride 1mg fall?

The cost to patients of a medicine depends on various factors; how much it costs to produce, how much demand there is, how many drug companies supply the same medicine, and how flexible the market is. Even when the wholesale supply price of a medicine falls, the price patients pay does not always fall by the same amount. Retail pharmacies may try not to pass on reduced supply costs to patients, and instead use falling wholesale prices to boost profits. If there is price competition between retailers, as there tends to be between online pharmacies and online clinics, price to patients usually fall in line with falls in wholesale supply costs, but not always.

Dr Fox is one of the lowest cost suppliers of most medicines for both branded and generic medicines.

At the moment (10 Dec 2014) only three pharmaceutical companies, apart from Merck, are supplying finasteride 1mg tablets. These companies areTrent,Actavis, andMylanAt the time of writing, all are offering their generic equivalent of Propecia at the same price; about 10% less than branded Propecia. Prices will hopefully tumble further in the days and weeks to come (as happened when last year).UPDATE JANUARY 2022Generic finasteride is now less than 30% of the price of Propecia from Dr Fox.

The original patent holder, Merck (MSD) may reduce the price of Propecia, or start to market its own generic finasteride 1mg alongside branded Propecia.

Brand loyalty and peace of mind

Not all men who previously took Propecia will switch to generic finasteride 1mg, even if the price of Propecia remains high and generic finasteride is a lot cheaper. If a patient is happy with a particular brand of tablet, they often will not switch to a lower cost equivalent, even if they are reliably advised that one tablet is medically the same as the other. Whether or not they switch depends on how much they wish to economise, and all the other factors which keep people buying certain products at high prices when they do not have to.

    Background

Finasteride 1mg tablets are taken daily to reduce hair loss in men, and can promote hair regrowth. See Dr Fox for details.

Cheap Propecia may be on its way which would be welcome news to the many men suffering distress as a result of male pattern hair loss.

Cheaper medicines for hair loss Medicine by the 1mg/day cost around $ 20 per tablet

Most reputable online clinics and private NHS hospitals still produce finasteride 1mg tablets. However, the UK patent for finasteride 1mg has expired and will soon be able to supply generic Propecia.

Prices for Propecia and finasteride were remarkably stable at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart during the second half of 2020.

Average prices for Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride, at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart ended the second half of 2020 almost exactly where they began the six-month period in July. Prices at all three pharmacies started 2020 with a healthy 50% price cut for Propecia and nearly 75% price cut for finasteride, both of which held steady.

Prices dipped by another 10% or so starting in April, but this discount quickly dried up and prices returned to the low-to-mid $4 range for Propecia 1 mg. Generic finasteride prices have held steady ever since at all three pharmacies.

Propecia and finasteride are arguably the most effective treatments to combat male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Thenoted that these medications “have been clinically proven to successfully treat hair loss in men to varying degrees.” In some cases, men treated with these drugs have experienced an end to hair loss, while in others, hair loss not only stops but some hair regrows as well.

    Second-Half Prices at CVS

At CVS, the average price for Propecia began the second half at $4.33 per 1 mg tablet in July. It’s remained at that price through the first quarter of 2021

Similarly, CVS’s price for finasteride 1 mg began and ended the second half of 2020 at $2.70, where it’s remained

    Walgreens Prices

Following the same pattern seen at CVS, Walgreens price for 1 mg Propecia began the second half at $4.35 in July and ended it at the same price in December. Walgreens is the most expensive between the three pharmacies but only by pennies.

Walgreens price for 1 mg finasteride was $2.58 in both December and March.

    Walmart Prices Stable

Displaying their usual propensity for undercutting the competition, Walmart’s prices for 1 mg Propecia were consistently the lowest at $4.14 for the entirety of the second half of 2020. That’s remained in place through March.

Finasteride prices at Walmart held steady at the bargain basement price of $1.13 in each month of the second half, producing a completely predictable six-month average of … wait for it … $1.13.

A complete snore-fest at all three major pharmacy retailers? Or a beacon of stability amidst the volatility of literally everything else this year? You decide.

    DHT is the Main Culprit

The main culprit behind male pattern baldness is an androgen known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. DHT gradually shrinks hair follicles until they can no longer support hair growth. An enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase apparently triggers the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Propecia and finasteride combat hair loss by inhibiting this enzyme, thus reducing scalp levels of DHT.
